MISSION STATMENT

Drawing inspiration from the fundamental values and teaching of Islam as articulated by the writings of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the IRD will take steps towards evolving culture of peace, tolerance, and harmony in Pakistan and among the Muslim Ummah. It will promote and develop dialogical rationalism and will create an awareness of humanity’s common aspiration and endeavor to build a morally-informed, just social order.

FORWARD

The IRD has won a respectable place as a global center of excellence and as an open forum for creative work, candid conversation, and lively debates on issues of contemporary relevance to Islamic societies. The IRD has emerged as the busiest intellectual forum in Pakistan during the past five years. The Institute invites researchers and scholars from all over the world in various disciplines and arranges public lectures, panel discussions, conferences, workshops and seminars.

ABOUT IRD

The Iqbal International Institute for Research & Dialogue (IRD) is an autonomous unit of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) with its own Governing Council under the chairmanship of the Rector of IIUI. It was established in June 2007 as a global centre of excellence in Islamic Studies to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to the study of contemporary Islamic thought with particular emphasis on areas such as human rights, rule of law, pluralism, tolerance, democracy, Islam and the West, inter-faith dialogue and relations, and Islamic responses to religious extremism and violence.

OBJECTIVES:


  • To provide an open forum for creative work, candid discussions and lively debates on issues of contemporary relevance to Islamic societies.
  • To bring together researchers and scholars of the highest caliber from all over the world in the field of contemporary Islamic thought as Iqbal Fellows to give public lectures, conduct seminars, teach courses and interact with the students and faculty of the Pakistani universities and other educational and civil society institutions.
  • To transmit the dynamic and forward-looking message of Allama Muhammad Iqbal to community leaders, trainers and civil society leaders.
  • To create an intellectually challenging environment which can promote new thinking to develop a vision leading to personal and social transformation.
  • To collaborate with like-minded persons and institutions in Pakistan and the world at large for promoting a better understanding of Islam and creating an awareness of humanity’s common endeavor to create a moral and just social order.
  • To develop and introduce courses on Islamic culture and civilization using modern methodologies for students and others desirous of acquiring knowledge about Islam.

    I express my sincere congratulations to the Executive Director of the IRD Dr. Husnul Amin for his remarkable efforts and struggle. In a short period of its existence, the Institute has already held several international and national conferences, symposia, panel discussions, distinguished lectures, etc. A large number of leading scholars and statesmen from around the world have been visiting the University under the aegis of the Institute. I am proud to know that the IRD brings researchers and scholar of the highest caliber from all over the world in the field of contemporary Islamic thoughts as Iqbal fellows to work on their research project, give public lectures, conduct seminars, teach courses and interact with the students and faculty of the IIUI. The Institute has created facilities for organizing events and residential accommodation for visiting scholars and plans to expand its activities further by establishing a collaborative relationship with well-known think tanks, research organizations, and scholars from all over the world.

    We at the International Islamic University, Islamabad believe ourselves privileged to be associated with this unique center of learning in the Muslim world which strives to combine the essentials of the Islamic faith with the best of modern knowledge. Throughout my association with the IIU as its Rector, I have been keenly interested in the programs and activities of the IRD and have never missed the opportunity to participate in its conferences and seminars.
