ABOUT THE BOOK
The IRD in collaboration with Islam & Liberty Network organized International Conference on “Building an Islamic Case for Open Markets” in Islamabad. The book comprises all the papers which were presented in the conference. The book has advanced the debate on Islam and Economics by presenting an Islamic case for open markets and institutional tenets of a comprehensive system. This will triggers new and empirical questions and will help improve the understanding of the students of Islamic economics and will provide some fresh insights for academics and practitioners.
ABOUT THE EDITORS
Dr. Husnul Amin is an Associate Professor at the Department of Politics & International Relations & Executive Director of the Iqbal International Institute for Research & Dialogue (IRD), International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI). He has recently been awarded Fulbright Research Fellowship (2019-20). His research project concerning social movements studies is hosted by the Stockton University Galloway, NJ, USA. He received BS (Honors) and MSc (Economics) degrees from the School of Economics IIUI. In 2006, he was awarded foreign fellowship to pursue his PhD in Development Studies with further specialization in Political Sociology from the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He was awarded post-doc fellowship supported by the DRS-COFUND Fellowship Progrm of Freie University Berlin and the European Commission, hosted by the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures & Societies (BGSMCS) during his research stay (2013-2014); availed fellowship at William & Mary, Virginia, USA (Jan 2014), and short term research stay at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, USA (Oct 2015). He has served as a Teaching Research Assistant (TRA) at International Institute of Social Studies (ISS); visiting faculty at Iqra Unviersity and National Defense University; Chairman IIUI Literary Society; Member board of Studies of Social Sciences and Politics & IR at IIUI; Chairman Steering Committee UNCW-IIUI linkage Program; Member National Curriculum Review Committee, International Relations, Higher Education Commission of Pakistan; and Head of the Department of Politics and International Relations, FSS, IIUI. He has been providing academic research supervision since 2010. Dr. Amin wrote columns in Urdu Daily Mashriq on social and cultural issues. His main areas of teaching and research are: Post-Islamism and Islamic Social Movements; Ethnicity, Migration, and Nationalism; International Political Economy; Religion and Politics in the Middle East; Politics of the Middle East; Advanced Research Methods; Public Policy Analysis; and Globalization & World Politics.
Ali Salman is a founding member and CEO of Islam & Liberty Network Foundation, a global platform for researchers, academics and public intellectuals exploring and promoting a ‘Muslim Case for Freedom’. He is the author of Islam & Economics: Markets, Morals & Justice (forthcoming) and State Intervention in commodity markets: Discord between economic freedom and social justice in Islam (2012). Currently, Ali is based in Malaysia, where he heads the leading Malaysian think tank, Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS). With about 20 years of highly diverse work experience, Ali has worked in the government, academia, and private sector in his home country, Pakistan. In 2013, he founded PRIME Institute, an independent think tank in Islamabad, and is now associated as a trustee. Prior to this, he authored more than thirty independent studies, reports and monographs on wide range of topics including regional trade, public finance, competition policy, innovation, and youth policy. His clients included multilateral agencies, governments, non-profits and private firms. Ali has also remained actively engaged with the government as an economist and public policy expert. He has advised competition commission of Pakistan analyzing economic implications of legal decisions. He has also served on the Board of Punjab Saaf Pani Company, a government owned company for provisioning of clean drinking water in Pakistan. Ali played an instrumental role in writing Pakistan’s first youth policy. Ali has taught courses on Economics and Entrepreneurship as adjunct faculty for several years. He writes a regularly on economic developments in Pakistan and Malaysia in various newspapers. Ali holds master degrees in Economics, Public Policy and Business Administration. He is recipient of Fulbright Scholarship, Royal Netherlands Fellowship and Charles Wallace Fellowship.
